WPM = Word Per Minute The goal for 5th grade is 25 wpm, 6th grade is 30 with no errors!
Practice:
Practice means you do it over and over as fast as you can in order to improve. You only stop when I tell you...remember I am your coach!!
First, find out what you skill is starting today. Go to the typingsite and choose a test from #26-#36, (the classic tales)
When time is up, it will tell you what your WPM was, how many errors you had, and your ADJUSTED WPM. The ADJUSTED number is what you remember. Press "F5" and start another as fast as possible!!
You are competing against yourself! The next test you take, your goal is to improve your highest score by 1; if you do, you're a winner!!!!
Lessons: The typing site has 30 lessons, adding 2 keys at a time. Start with the first lesson, then go to the next when you master it. Building your skill 2 keys at a time will have you starting slow, becoming smooth, then you will work on your speed. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast!! Create a spreadsheet to keep up with your WPM progress:
Open your folder and right click>new>Microsoft Excel Worksheet
Name it "WPM"
Label 2 columns "DATE" and "WPM"
Each day record your highest score for that day
WORD PROCESSING: Home Ribbon: Font and Paragraph areas Quick access: how to add and "best friend" undo Spell/Grammer check Insert Ribbon: clip art text box Page Layout: orientation to landscape Use the zoom slider so you can see the top and bottom of your document. This way you will see how you're using your white space. All about Me Paragraph: In your folder, create a new word document called "All about Me"
The title is "All about Me" centered at the top
Press enter to get to a new line and realign your text back to the left
Tab to indent for a paragraph
Only press enter when your are finished with a paragraph. It will automatically begin a new line when it reaches the end of the right margin: "wrap text"
Your paper should be a minimum of 150 words. The word count will be on the lower left of your document.
Tell me about yourself! Make it interesting! Be descriptive! If you like video games, which ones? If you tell me about your family, what are their names, what do they do? Favorite: places, holidays, subjects, hobbies, where you've lived, etc. You got the idea.
Be sure to pay attention to spell and grammar check!
DON'T end with "The End", or "That's all about me. What do you think?" That's lame.
When finished, resize your text to fit on one page, but no go over into two pages
Think of your audience: it needs to be easy to read and get the point across, so....
Change the font style to something easy to read, NOT cursive!
DTP PRACTICE DOCUMENT: Text boxes: Create a new word document in your folder called "Practice" Figure out how to place your name in the center of the paper using a text box Center text; remove fill and outline; make fill a color and add a border: make it thick
Images: Images are made of pixels. The more the higher the resolution, the less the lower the resolution. Less pixels stretch out when made larger creating pixelation. Use my shortcut to google images, advanced search. Advanced search allows you to choose colors, types, size The images you first see are low resolution pictures called "thumbnails" for less memory and allows the page to load faster Click a thumbnail to go to the higher resolution picture; right click, copy, then paste on a word document IMPORTANT: you must change the text wrap of an image to "tight" in order to move it Practice: Copy and paste a thumbnail and then the higher resolution of the same picture. Stretch out the thumbnail; you will probably see pixelation as it has fewer pixels! Practice: ANIMAL SCAVENGER HUNT.docx
click the "Print Screen" key on the upper right of your keyboard
open up a word document in your folder and name it "PRINT SCREEN"
right click>paste
crop the image to only show your score
change your orientation to "landscape"
change the text wrap to "tight"
make it fill the page
"Snip It": In your start button you will find a tool called "Snip It" with an icon of scissors. When you select this a menu will pop up. Select the area you want to capture; it will save it on your clipboard if you just want to paste it on a document or you may save it in your folder.
WORDLE Wordle is a website that will place your words in a "word cloud". My bookmarks tags show in a word cloud; the words that are larger are used more. Open your "ALL ABOUT ME" paragraph; add your name at least 5 times and copy the entire paper
Play with it to see different types text, styles, colors
if you want a word larger, add it several more times on your word document and copy again
When you have it the way you want:
open it in a full window
print screen
Open a word document in your folder called "WORDLE"
paste it on a word document
Change the page orientation to "Landscape"
Make you image text wrap "tight"
On the format ribbon use the crop tool to take off the extra screen you don't want
Resize to fit your page
When finished with the first Wordle made with your paragraph, you may make another using words that you choose. Remember: the more times you have a word, the larger it will be. If you make another, can call it “Wordle 2”, "Wordle 3", etc. You can make as many as you want. TAGXEDO This is a different site that also makes word clouds, but can be made in a shape and saved. http://www.tagxedo.com/ HINTS I'VE LEARNED SO FAR:
click "load" to enter your text
if you have copied and want to paste text, you have to "Control>V" to paste it in; it won't let you right click to paste
down in the layout options, you can make your shape "tight" (I think that's what it's called). That way the words won't stick out off the shape
if you want 2 words to stay together (ex: Corpus Christi, min pin) place a "tilde" between the words. A tilde is the shift option on the key right below the escape key: ~. So it would be Corpus~Christi, min~pin...
to save it: in the save options (there's lots of them!), choose the largest size to save it as a JPG and place it in your folder
Remember: make as many products as you want!!! Flicker Letters: This site will create words using letters from Flicker! Screen capture your word using "Print Screen" or "Snip It". Use a word document if you want to edit by putting words together. __Neon Letters__ Create up to 3 lines with a different color for each line and choices of backgrounds. Make your pet talk Load your pet's picture and select words for it to say! Hilarious!!
